Our short return to Asia

“You have to taste a culture to understand it” – Deborah Cater

We will always have a big connection to Asia having spent 2 1/2 years living in Japan and 1 year backpacking our way through the amazing continent. So with a couple of weeks leave from work  we decided to return to some of our favourite countries. With such a short trip in comparison with our years of travel we decided to make this predominantly a food related trip so get ready for the onslaught of food pics!

Happy to leave the biggest and most scariest earthquake we have ever experienced, we boarded the new Singapore airlines route from Wellington to Singapore with a short layover in Canberra. We were excited to catch up with our friend Shino and eat our way through the delicious Indian and Chinese food that Singapore has to offer. We hadn’t visited Singapore since our first Asian adventure in 2009 and it was amazing to see how such a small country was still able to build upwards and outwards.

Next stop was a return to Sri Lanka – one of our favourite countries and the main destination on our travels. We decided to do it a little different to our usual style of travel and hire a driver as time wasn’t on our side. For $50 per day including all his expenses, it was a great decision to make as we were able to visit far more places in such a short time. With travel recommendations from a work colleague and his family, we set off for the cultural epicentre of Sri Lanka. First stop Anuradhapura which was the former capital of Sri Lanka and now contains ruins of this ancient city. It was then onto Sigiriya where an ancient civilisation built on top of a giant rock. Reminds me a lot of a mini Machu Pichu! A couple more stops at Mihintale and Dambulla before returning to Hikkadewa for some beach time. Although a lot busier and built up since our last visit, the beach is still beautiful and we found a great guesthouse with a lovely family running it.

With our final days looming, we headed to another one of our favourite countries – Malaysia. This was now our third visit here and we were very focussed on what we wanted to eat. Staying with my Aunty also meant we got to try other places we wouldn’t have known about, the highlight being a Dining in the Dark experience where we ate a delicious 4 course meal in pitch black and were served by visually impaired wait staff. A once in a lifetime experience!

Our travel adventures have reignited us – where to next and for how long is our next question!!
